In Kenya, 7 million children are becoming fluent readers

For the first time, every Class 1 and 2 student in public schools across the country can learn from their own textbook as well as supplementary reading material like story books. Before, schools could not afford to purchase enough textbooks and it was common to see several children huddled over one book.

Those aren’t the only changes. Gone are the rote lessons with kids copying words off a chalkboard.

In their place: interactive learning directed by enthusiastic teachers who now have an arsenal of new tools to encourage students to actively participate in class. Reading lessons are not only easier to comprehend, but they’re fun.
