Title
A Post Medieval incomplete copper alloy sword belt hanger dating AD1575 - 1600
Description
English: A Post Medieval incomplete copper alloy sword belt hanger dating AD1575 - 1600. This element of the sword belt hanger comprises the plate with suspension loops projecting from the lower edge. Approximately half the plate is broken and missing and there is only one suspension loop surviving. The suspension loop has a circular perforation that is located off-centre so it is nearer the top edge of the suspension loop. The lower edge of the loop is thickened. The plate has a trefid terminal at the one surviving end and the plate then narrows before expanding at towards the middle of the plate. There are two rivet holes arranged long the mid-line; one near the trifid end and one incomplete along the break. The front surface of the plate is decorated with a foliate pattern in relief in a style known an 'vine scroll'. There are some traces of a black coating surviving in the recessed areas of the pattern.

Similar examples are recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database e.g. IOW-064D43, SUSS-39C8C4 and a complete example has been published (Read 2001: 39, fig. 26, ref: 373).

Dimensions: length: 33.14mm; width: 30.04mm; thickness: 4.39mm; weight: 8.67g.
