Title
A Roman copper alloy needle, dating to the 3rd and 4th centuries A.D.
Description
English: Part of a Roman copper alloy needle. This needle is classified as a type 3 needle with a groove above and below the eye by Crummy in the second Colchester Archaeological report (1983; 67). All of the needles catalogued in the Colchester report they were from third and fourth century contexts, although some have been found in post Roman contexts in other sites in colchester which may not be residual as there is recurance of the type in the post - medieval period (ibid). Despite this the other finds that this needle was found with and the location would suggest that this needle is of a Roman date.

This object is very similar to NARC - 55C9A5, except that it is missing the eye and it's point. Part of the groove still exists however, and measures 5.07mm from the top. It is also quite interesting to nate that the shank of the needle is a little bent in a similar way that a hair pin may have been, suggesting a possible re - use of the artifact.
