Title
A Roman copper alloy pin, dating from the 1st to the 5th centuries A.D.
Description
English: A Roman copper alloy group 5, sub group C (as per cool, 1990) hair pin. This group is characterised by the decoration of grooves cut into the top of the shank and in this example the grooves are cross hatched. Cool (1990; 157) notes that the pins are generally quite slender which is correct for this pin and that although they have been found in contexts through out the Roman period, the pins are more commonly found in second century deposits. The pin itself is slightly curved, probably from use. The decoration is 6.77mm in length and is bordered by a single goove cut both above and below the pattern marking the extent of the decoration. The diameter is generally uniform across the length of the pin and only starts to taper to a point 93.02mm toward the point of the pin.
