Title
a Roman mount or furniture fitting
Description
English: A cast copper alloy, bell shaped stud, probably a furniture fitting, dating from the Roman period. It is circular in plan with flaring at one end. The smaller end of the stud has a flat face with the remains of a ferrous shaft in the centre. The wider end of the stud has a flat rim and a concave central section which rises in the middle to an integral, circular projection. It is undecorated. The stud has a smooth, mid green patina. It is 20mm in diameter and 16.1mm high. It weighs 10.68gm.

A similar, more complete example from a second century context is illustrated in Crummy, 1983, Colchester Archaeological Report Number 2, page 125, number 4143. Further examples can be found on the database at references: HAMP-5AE9E3 and SWYOR-EF0EE5.
