Title
a Roman zoomorphic brooch
Description
English: An incomplete Roman copper alloy duck brooch dating from the late 2nd-early 3rd Century. The brooch is missing the hinge and pin. The brooch is shaped like a duck or other swimming water bird with a rounded front and tear-drop shaped body that tapers towards the tail end. The neck is short and stocky, curving downwards; the head is small and the bill short. The duck also has a small semi-circular plate at the rear, indicating the tail feathers. It is otherwise undecorated. The underside of the brooch is hollow. There is ferrous corrosion around the lug which used to house the hinge and pin and it has spread outward to coat part of the underside. The catchplate survives, but not the turnover. The brooch has a medium-light green patina and the corrosion underneath has an orange patina. For a similar duck brooch, please also see PAS record ID LANCUM-A4A7D8, and more finely decorated examples are LEIC-EDEE81 and NLM-6A4CD4. See Hattatt, page 360, figure 219.
