Title
A Romano-British copper alloy figurine of Minerva.
Description
English: A Romano-British copper-alloy figurine of Minerva. The figurine is in a good state of preservation. The figurine comprises a three-dimensional depiction of the bust of Minerva minus the arms. The head is solid, round and depicts Minerva as slightly 'chubby'. Her eyes are represented by two deep circular holes; the nose and mouth are marked by shallow grooves. The mouth is slightly curved, giving the appearance of a gentle smile. Two angular mouldings on the forehead represent the hairline, above. Minerva wears a low-crested 'Corinthian-style' helmet that has been drilled at the top allowing the figurine to be suspended. It is not clear whether this is an original feature or a later addition, though the crest of the helmet seems rather narrow to have a suspension hole as an original design feature. There is little wear around the hole. The body is decorated on both sides by two straps that cross over the centre of the chest and back respectively. The straps are represented by pairs of grooves. On the front are two deep circular holes that probably represent breasts. A single angled groove is located on the outside of either breast thus enclosing each one in a lozenge. The bust sits ontop of a rectangular plinth. The plinth is square in cross-section and has two steps at the top and at the base. The figurine can free-stand, but it is not very stable. The figurine measures 45mm in length, 27mm in width and 11mm in thickness.
