Title |
A cast copper-alloy scabbard chape of late 15th to 16th century |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper-alloy scabbard chape of late 15th to 16th century. The chape is cast in one piece and is broadly shield shaped in plan. The sides curve and then converge at the base terminating in a basal lobed or globular knop. The top of the chape has a central lobe, which appears to be broken, flanked by concave curves with pointed projections at either side, one missing. A slightly raised rib runs down the centre of the front of the chape. To either side of the rib there are openwork designs consisting of an asymmetrical circle above a sub-rectangle but is otherwise undecorated. The artefact has a dark green patina on its upper surface. It is 52mm in length, 20mm in depth and 10mm thick. |
