A cast copper alloy Polden Hill style Roman brooch dating to the first century AD.
Description
English: A cast copper alloy probably of the Polden Hill style Roman brooch dating to the first century AD. The brooch is intact complete with spring and pin and in good condition - an exact comparison could not be found in Hattatt. The brooch is decorated with a raised circle with indentation possibly to house an enamel piece, a set of eight small raised panels diamond shaped are aligned down the bow with a raised line running down either side. The decoration travels the length of the bow stopping at a knop at the foot of the catchplate which is decorated with an upper and lower transverse line. The catchplate is long and wide extending halfway up the bow. The length is 36mm, width 12mm and the weight is 12g.
