Title |
A cast copper alloy double loop oval buckle, dating from 1550-1700 AD. |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy double loop oval buckle (length: 40mm; width: 37mm; thickness: 3.9mm; weight: 11.68g) with slightly visible remains of moulded decoration, particularly with a collar and arches at either end of the strap bar. A large part of one side of the buckle has broken off. The pin is still present but loosely attached. The general condition of the buckle is poor and corroded with deterioration all over, especially bronze disease on the pin and around the frame. Similar examples are illustrated in Ross Whitehead's 'Buckles 1250-1800', 1996, pages 66-7. Whitehead has suggested a date between c. 1550-1650, but a broader date range of c. 1550-1700 AD should be given. |
