Title
A complete Medieval cast copper-alloy horse harness pendant, dating from the 13th-14th centuries AD.
Description
English: A complete Medieval cast copper-alloy horse harness pendant, dating from the 13th-14th centuries AD. The horse harness pendant consists of two pieces: a quatrefoil pendant frame with integrally-cast suspension loop and the pendant itself, still articulated within the frame. The frame has a roughly D-shaped suspension loop with circular suspension hole running parallel to the front face of the pendant. This loop is attached to the pendant frame by means of a sub-triangular base followed by two horizontal raised decorative ridges above a rectangular-sectioned hinge pendant hinge mechanism. The hinge mechanism is pierced through with circular rivet holes at either side with an iron rivet still intact; there is an open notch in the middle to facilitate the suspension loop of the pendant itself, which is also rectangular in cross-section. The pendant frame is quatrefoil in plan, with semi-circular moulded discs at the inner corners of the quatrefoil. On the outer edge of the discs, there is a small projecting knop. The inner edge of the pendant frame is bevelled and the frame's quatrefoil decoration is triangular in cross-section, whereas the decorative discs are flat in section. The pendant itself is cruciform in plan, with circular knops at the ends and in the centre of the outer face, but the reverse face is completely flat and undecorated. Traces of gilding on the outer surface of all of the components suggest that this object was completely gilded on the front, however no traces of gilding remain on the reverse and the reverse is flat, indicating that the object was only meant to be seen from the front. The length is 45mm, the width is 32mm and the weight 18.97g. Similar to SUSS-49AE0A, WILT-B5F782 and LIN-EF2662
