Title
A complete cast copper-alloy medieval seal matrix of conical form (c. 15th century AD).
Description
English: A complete cast copper-alloy medieval seal matrix of conical form (c. 15th century AD). The handle is hexagonally faceted. The suspension loop is recessed and six-sided, protruding in a pentagonal form. It has a slightly off-centre circular perforation. The sub-circular die (15 x 13mm) features a central device which is difficult to make out possibly a 'fylfot' cross, with one arm crossed and the others with small protrusions in the same direction. The border area around is slightly recessed and is unusual for lacking any inscription. It is decorated with widely spaced 'v' shaped lines. The artefact has an even dark green patina. The 'fylfot' cross was an ancient symbol of good luck. Other matrices bearing similar symbols can be found on this database, e.g.: HAMP-571555, ESS-534C80, NMGW-CD3D97. The length is 17mm, width 12mm and the weight 3.17g.
