Title
A copper-alloy domed circular mount of Medieval to Post-Medieval date.
Description
English: A copper-alloy mount of Medieval to Post-Medieval date. This mount is circular in shape with a diameter of 27.8mm. It is domed with a convex front and concave reverse to a maximum depth of 5.1mm. The mount weighs 5.63g and has a thickness at the edge of 1.4mm. At the centre of the mount there is a circular aperture of 4.5mm diameter through which a separate nail or rivet would have been used to attach the mount. Touch indicates that this aperture was made from the front of the mount through to the reverse surface as the metal at the edge of the aperture curves outwards on the reverse surface. The metal surrounding the aperture on the upper surface is smooth. The upper surface is decorated with three moulded subtle ribs that form concentric circles between the central aperture and edge of the object. The reverse surface is smooth, except for the out turned metal around the aperture, indicating that this artefact was not machine pressed.

Dating: Egan, G. and Pritchard, F. 2002 date circular domed mounts from c. AD 1270. By the late 1700s AD machine presses were being used. As such it is likely that this mount was made between c.AD 1250-1800.

While the mount may have been attached to a leather strap its size may suggest that it is a furniture or casket mount.
