Summary

[edit]
Author
Willem Van de Velde, the Younger
Description
English: A kaag near the shore

On the right there is a port broadside view of a bezan-rigged kaag close in to the shore. In the centre foreground, a man is holding a pole and a boy is by his side. On the left, a boeier yacht is before a very light breeze. Two ships in the distance becalmed.

This is an unsigned pencil and wash drawing by the Younger. It is inscribed on the back in brown ink, not obviously Van de Velde’s hand, ‘? Wiel goet voor wager’; and in a late hand in pencil ‘W Van de Velde 1677’.

A vertical line by the ship on the left and another by the bow of a kaag, both numbered 4, illustrate a method of drawing in correct perspective. The two figures in the foreground are carefully drawn so that the head of the four foot high boy reaches the horizon line.

The drawing is rubbed on the back indicating that an offset has probably been taken from it.
