Description |
English: Gray-green leaf plant with small purple flower A member of the nightshade family that is quite showy when in flower. Considered an invasive weed toxic to livestock because of solanine reported to be present in the leaves and unripe fruit. The star-shaped purple flower has five long triangular fused petals that are wrinkled and thin with wavy edges surrounding the bright yellow stamen in the center. The round berry-like fruit is greenish-gray to mottled brown turning orange when ripe. Silverleaf Nightshade contains a digestive enzyme, historically combined with animal brain tissue and used to tan hides. Native Americans used the crushed fruit to curdle milk when making cheese. |
