Title |
A post medieval cast copper alloy book clasp hook section, 16th century AD. |
||
Description |
English: A post medieval cast copper alloy book clasp hook section, 16th century AD. The find consists of the hook section of a two-piece cast copper alloy book clasp. One terminal is a fantail-shape, which progresses through a waisted section before extending outwards into a vertical rectangle. This abuts the main length of the mount which consists of a horizontal lozenge-shape, whilst the outer terminal section is shaped like a vertical rectangle with a small hooked tab projecting from the centre of the outermost edge. The mount has been decorated with an incised geometric pattern. The two rectangular fields are filled with small incised zigzags, whilst the central lozenge shape is divided into a central lozenge filled with small striations, and an outer border with a rope-pattern of parallel diagonal incisions. In the centre of the fantail terminal, a rivet remains in situ; this would have attached the clasp to a leather strap to hold a book shut. The reverse of the mount is undecorated, but where the rivet has pierced through from the obverse a copper alloy square plate is present. In between these two copper alloy components there is a fair amount of concretion. The entire clasp section is in very good condition, and has a mid red-brown patina.
Dimensions: length: 37.67mm; width: 14.94mm; thickness: 2.09mm; weight: 2.41g. Related find: LON-670704 |
