A post medieval hooked tag |

Description |
English: Post medieval cast copper alloy dress hook. The central circular plate has a flat border surrounding a domed centre with a concave back and convex front. On the centre are moulded the letters IhS. On the flat border there is an inner and outer thin plain line border with a ring of pellets or possibly cabling between them. The hook and loop are opposite each other and are both D shaped in section with a flat back and convex front. The loop is almost entirely missing with only the stubs remaining. Part of the straight upper section of the hook remains, it is broken before the bend. Read (2008:92, No.319) illustrates a similar example with an IHS monograph and catogorises this type as Early Post Medieval Class E Type 3 and suggests they date from AD 1500-1625, with most being used 1500-1550 and possibly some residual use into the 18th century. |
