Title |
A probable cast and tinned copper alloy shoe or knee buckle frame, dating between 1650-1750 AD. |
||
Description |
English: A probable cast tinned copper alloy shoe or knee buckle frame, dating between 1650-1750 AD (length: 33.1mm; width: 21.8mm; thickness: 3.9mm; weight: 6.82g). The buckle would have originally been a 'two piece buckle' with a drilled frame for a separate spindle, but only the frame survives. Of trapezoidal shape, the buckle frame is slightly worn and has faint grooves on the outer edge of each loop, as well as more compact but smaller grooves to either side of the spindle holes across the width of the buckle. Additionally, at the ends of the spindle holes, there is a small square platfrom with a groove running through the centre. The spindle or bar was probably originally made of iron, indicated by the presence of iron corrosion present at the spindle holes. The reverse of the buckle is undecorated. Similar artefacts are illustrated in Ross Whitehead's 'Buckles 1250-1800', pages 98-9. |
