In de negentiende-eeuwse beschrijving wordt de schrijver geïdentificeerd als Ralph Allen, ondernemer en magistraat te Bath. De boekverkoper is waarschijnlijk de boekhandelaar John Nourse, hij was gevestigd 138 Strand te Londen.
