Title |
Adlocutio medal from Scunthorpe |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy Medal. Probably cast medal in the style of a Roman coin of the 1st or 2nd century AD, with a prominent rim on both sides. Obverse description: Bust laureate right; bust has cheery expression and a pointed nose. Obverse inscription: IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG Reverse description: Adlocutio scene; emperor standing left in front of a curule chair on a stage right, addressing a line of five standing soldiers to the left; the soldiers have four standards and the front man holds a shield before him. Four copper alloy pins are set at each corner of the scene and corrosion products may suggest they had fastened this object to another. Reverse inscription: ADLOC above the scene; in exergue: SC Diameter: 38.3mm, Weight: 20.46gms, die axis: 12. This object appears to be inspired by the Adlocutio coin brooch series, though differing from examples published by Hattatt (1987, 191-4) in several respects; these include the size - it is beyond the range he describes, of 32-33.5mm diameter; subject matter: the emperor is usually mounted and to the left, and fewer soldiers appear than here; and finally, it is probably cast not hammered. The Emperor Maximinus (235-238), and indeed his namesake Maximinus II (305-313) and the later Magnus Maximus (383-388) reigned later than most coins bearing this subject, which are dated between the 1st and the late 2nd centuries AD. This is perhaps a souvenir or novelty piece. The context of its manufacture is uncertain. Neither is a find spot known; the finder having found it in a drawer in his Scunthorpe home, where it had been for ten years |
