Family: Alangiaceae Local name: (Telugu) Uduga, Ankolam Distribution: Common along the tank bunds and forest, Found in Africa, India and China. Deciduous small trees, Leaves elliptic ovate, unequal at base, glabrous above, pubescent beneath, Flowers 3 cm across, white fragrant in fascicles , axillary or on old wood. Calyx tube adnate to the ovary, 4-10 toothed, petals 4-10 valvate, thickned, recurved in the flower, stamens as many as petals, anthers elongate linear, ovary inferior, 1-2 celled, Fruit a an ellipsoid, pubescent, berryReddish brown when mature Root bark is anthelmentic, fruits slighitly bitter, used against fevers. The wood is used to make famous Etikoppaka toys. |
