"Durante el siglo XVI la moda fue dictada por las cortes europeas —principalmente las de Italia, Francia, Alemania, Inglaterra y España. Elementos característicos en la indumentaria de ciertas naciones eran evidentes para la población de la época. Las cortes buscaban diferenciarse conforme al estilo de sus émulos.

Este retrato corresponde a Isabel de Médici, hija del II Duque de Florencia Cosme I de Médici y Leonor Álvarez de Toledo. Viste un traje de terciopelo de seda rojo con un escote amplio, cubierto por un canesú —pieza superior a la que se pegan el cuello, las mangas y el resto de la prenda— de encaje veneciano adornado con perlas. La presencia de esta piedra preciosa en la vestimenta era de uso exclusivo para las mujeres de la nobleza. Las abultadas hombreras son de estilo acuchillado, en el que las costuras están abiertas o se cortan deliberadamente en una prenda y se deja visible el forro —uno de los motivos más característicos de la moda al final del Renacimiento. El cinturón de oro decorado con piedras preciosas en la cintura es un símbolo adicional de riqueza.

El peinado a raya en medio sujeto por un discreto tocado compuesto por una redecilla de oro con diadema de perlas, junto con la presencia de un perro —símbolo de fidelidad, amor y lealtad—, nos indica que al momento de este retrato estaba casada con Paolo Giordano Orsini, Duque de Bracciano. En este periodo las mujeres solteras eran representadas con el cabello suelto." [1]
