Hello, Ecummenic!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thank you[edit]

Thank you for your wonderful work categorizing portraits. I saw it with Schimmelmann. Marvelous! If you feel so inclined, please take a look at the artwork images I've uploaded and add many more categories to them. I would appreciate it very much. Jdsteakley (talk) 15:12, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

dressing gown or bathrobe or overall[edit]

Hi, Ecummenic! Can you give me an advise - as I'm Russian and not native English speaker, I can't choose the right word for this clothing. How would you name the category for this clothing in art? File:Roman Maximovich Volkov - Ivan Krylov.jpg, File:Fedor Petrovich Tolstoy b.jpg and File:RepinMussorgsky.jpg?--Shakko (talk) 10:16, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

so, let it be category:bathrobes in art? or maybe, to include the variations, category:deshabille in art?--Shakko (talk) 19:37, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
ok, thanks for advice )--Shakko (talk) 20:38, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Silver clothing in art[edit]

Not too sure how many of the images you're adding to that category are really valid; File:Metsu viola-de-gamba.jpg seems to be wearing shiny light blue satin, File:Labille-Guiard, Adélaïde - Selfportrait - 1785 - cropped.jpg shiny light green satin, etc. AnonMoos (talk) 16:42, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Please don't blank pages[edit]

Hi Ecummenic,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed you blanked Category:Charles Emmanuel Leclerq on Commons. I asume you meant for the page to be deleted, but blanking the page is not the right way to do this. I'd like to strongly recommend to use type reason here and add it on top of the page you would like to have deleted; This way it will be placed on a special list that administrators check regulary for deletion. Without this it might take a long time before it's noticed. Thanks again. 19:44, 17 May 2010 (UTC)–Krinkletalk

Hi Ecummenic! Please preserve multi-lingual image descriptions when replacing the Information template by the Painting template. You can use the template LangSwitch for this purpose. -- Greetz Sir Gawain (talk) 06:57, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Portrait of Choderlos de Laclos (Amiens, Musée de l'hôtel de Berny)[edit]

Having noticed your username so many times, it has encouraged me to write you personally, dear Ecummenic.

I am afraid the portrait in question is attributed to Aleksander Kucharski. A portrait, the sitter of which is identified as Choderlos de Laclos (Versailles, Châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon), was previously attributed to Maurice Quentin de La Tour ‎; it has been attributed to Joseph Ducreux.

There is another version of the same work: Laclos.jpg.

Thank you.--Thorvaldsson (talk) 18:26, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Maria Antonia or Johanna Gabriela?[edit]

In this edit you claimed that the portrait File:Marie Antoinette by Liotard.jpg actually depicts Johanna Gabriela and not Maria Antonia. Are you sure? In 1762 Liotard painted pastel portraits of all six children, which you can see together here; I think they are, in the reading order, the portraits of: Maria Elisabeth; Karl Joseph; Maria Amalia; Johanna Gabriela; Maria Josepha; and Maria Antonia. What is presumably Liotard's portrait of Johanna Gabriela can be found here.  --Lambiam 19:16, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

Category renaming[edit]

Hi, thank you for the great work. It might be easier if you compile a list of categories to be renamed using Special:Categories/17, Special:PrefixIndex/Category:17, Special:Search/intitle:Category:17 century or using catscan. Personaly, I copy (text) such things in excel which makes it easy to convert them all in a

Rename Category:17th century paintings by genre to Category:17th-century paintings by genre Warning: Please add a reason. (7 entries moved, 0 to go)

format (by copy pasting 3 columns). Then you can submit such a list to COM:DL. Best. --Foroa (talk) 07:32, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Princess Beatrice of the United Kingdom[edit]

Hi Ecummenic, you added 20px to the category Category:Princess Beatrice of the United Kingdom. The source simply says it is Princess Beatrice, no more. Comparing this portrait with the photographs of the older Beatrice, it shows that the nose is quite different, so I have my doubts. How do you know it is princess Beatrice of the United Kingdom and not some other princess Beatrice? Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 16:08, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi, what's the deal about the dash after the centuries?

Category:16th-century oil on wood paintings Category:16th-century oil portraits of women Category:16th-century oil portraits of women at full length Category:19th-century oil portraits of girls at half length and so on. In my opinion, it's a typo so I would like to rename it (like ike Category:16th century oil on wood paintings. --Mattes (talk) 19:05, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

François de Poilly
Description

French engraver

Date of birth/death 1693

I suspect there may be some confusion here. The engraver of the image at File:Lacoste, Lesage, La Font - La Princesse de Carizme act1sc2 - césar.jpg is probably François (II) de Poilly (born Paris, 3 May 1671; buried Paris, 17 April 1723), the son of the François (I) de Poilly (born Abbéville, 1622; died Paris, March 1693). There was also François (III) de Poilly (baptised Paris, 8 May 1671 – buried Paris, 9 December 1741), son of Nicolas (I) de Poilly (born Abbéville, 1626; buried Paris, 3 March 1696). It is sometimes not possible to know which man did the engraving, since they probably worked as a family in the same atelier or one nearby. However, in this case, we can certainly eliminate François (I) since he died before the opéra-comique was created. (BTW, the life dates I use are from Bénézit. Other sources have some differences.) --Robert.Allen (talk) 01:30, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Removing a licence[edit]

Please be a little more attentive when modifying image details because you removed the copyright tag, I presume by accident, with this edit. I don't know if you did this more than once, so you may want to check your similar edits. Thanks. Ww2censor (talk) 08:31, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

PMJI, but I noticed that in a later edit, you removed data (size and ID) that had been added by another user. Was this intentional? Laura1822 (talk) 21:24, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

Artwork template[edit]

Hello, Ecummenic! Some of your edits use the template "Painting," but this redirects to Artwork. You should always use Artwork, not Painting. Otherwise, keep up the great work! Laura1822 (talk) 21:09, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

Copyright tag removal[edit]

I assume the part of this edit that removed the copyright tag was a mistake, for the image I found in Category:Media without a license: needs history check today. Please be more careful when editing such image details because it could well have been deleted for lack of a licence except that I reviewed the history, found the problem and fixed it. If you intentionally removed the licence then please tag it for deletion as missing a licence. You may want to review it. Regards Ww2censor (talk) 19:58, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

Good morning Ecummenic, while cleaning some meta information of files i came across paintings to which you added dates which are invalid, such as https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:1481_Kasimir.jpg&diff=77138776&oldid=77023328. Since i could not understand what you intended date was i kindly ask to do the correction on you own.
