Summary
[edit]DescriptionAlexander Sarcophagus, Short Side A, a fallen Greek and onother one killing a Persian, Istanbul Archaeology Museum (6137919946).jpg |
The fallen Greek is weaponless; traces of his broken lance and helmet, originally indicated in colour survive. He probably bore only an ephaptis rendered in colour. Making a last effort to defend himself with his shield, his muscled body rests on one arm, whilst he reaches upwards with the other. The last combat represents a Greek killing a Persian. His ephaptis flows over his left shoulder, its purple colour indicating that he is an officer or a senior soldier. Source: The Book of Alexander Sarcophagus by Alpay Pasinli |
