Description
Deutsch: Der Wettsteinbrunnen ging aus dem Kunstkredit Basel-Stadt hervor. Heinz Fiorese, Willi Hege, Peter Moilliet, Jakob Probst, Lous Weber, Adolf Weisskopf und Alexander Zschokke wurden für einen engeren Wettbewerb eingeladen. Die Brunnensäule, an der sich eine rot und blau bemalte Trommel mit Kindern befindet, steht zwischen dem zweistufigen Brunnentrog. Auf der Säule steht der ehemalige Basler Bürgermeister und Staatsmann Johann Rudolf Wettstein (1594 - 1666), der mit seinem Geschick den westfälischen Frieden herbeiführte. Er war ein Jäger und deshalb sitzt sein treuer Hund neben ihm. Am Brunnen steht die Inschrift: "Zum Andenken an Bürgermeister Johann Rudolf Wettstein 1594 - 1666 und zu Erinnerung an die Vereinigung von Kleinbasel und Grossbasel 1392". Der Brunnen hätte eigentlich schon 1892, anlässlich der 500jährigen Vereinigung zwischen Gross- und Kleinbasel entstehen sollen, aber anstatt den benötigten CHF 90000.-- kamen ganze CHF 8172.-- zusammen. So dauerte es bis ins Jahr 1954, bis das nötige Geld mit Zins und Zinseszinsen zusammengekommen war
