Professor Johnstone was famous at the time for his "psychic" powers and was challenged to find a lady's hat pin hidden while blindfolded in Wind Cave in 1893. Moore was a newspaper writer for Deadwood's Daily Times and present to document the search. McDonald was one of Wind Cave's earliest explorers and first tour guide, and was present to ensure the three did not get lost in their search.
