Title
Ampulla
Description
English: A lead ampulla, made by casting, apparently as one piece. The body of the ampulla is decorated on one side with a scallop shall motif made up simply of raised lines fanning from the base of the neck. The other side is undecorated. The top of the neck is mostly undamaged, although it shows no sign of having been sealed. The reverse has a large crack between the neck and the body, with a number of fracture lines; the edge of the base of the body has been lost. This damaged may have been caused by plough action. The lead is in poor condition; the surface is light grey and smooth. This artefact dates to the medieval period, and probably originated in the pilgrim centre of Santiago de Compostela in North-West Spain, as the scallop was the badge of St. James.
