Title
An incomplete Roman nail cleaner.
Description
English: An incomplete Roman copper alloy nail cleaner dating to c AD 43-150. The nail cleaner comprises a circular suspension loop (c 7.14mm in diameter), about half missing, pierced with a circular hole (c 3.12mm in diameter). The suspension loop is joined to the almost circular, flat, leaf-shaped body of the nail cleaner by a short neck (c 4mm in length), oval in cross section (3.58mm x 2.40mm) which narrows as it meets the body. Below this is a flat stem (13.25mm in length, 3.18mm in width) which ends in a bifurcate terminal, also now broken such that only one prong remains. The item is undecorated. The nail cleaner is probably Crummy Type 2a, Cf Crummy, N, 1983, Colchester Archaeological Report 2: The Roman small finds from excavations in Colchester 1971-9, Colchester Archaeological Trust Ltd, Colchester p 58 no 1874 (although the loop of 1874 is at right angles to the body). It is similar to WILT - 1356D5.

It is 38.04mm in length, 16.43mm in width at its widest (diameter of body), and weighs 1.56g.
