Summary

[edit]
Description

"Angelia Singleton Van Buren (1816 - 1877). Married Abraham Van Buren in November 1838. White House hostess 1838 - 1840. In his 1848 will, Angelica’s father stated that the land, slaves and other personal property from two South Carolina plantations should be managed to benefit his daughters, Marion and Angelica. When Richard Singleton died in 1852, Angelica and Abraham became responsible for 300 “dependents,” as her journal referred to enslaved people on her family’s plantations."
