Title |
Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy mount |
||
Description |
English: Fragment of an Anglo-Saxon object decorated in Salin Style II. The object is probably a Pressblech die for making foil mounts. The object has a sub-rectangular shank that is flat on one of the long-sides, but which tapers on the other side from about half way down the object. The terminal is rounded and does not appear to be broken. The other end has a raised panel from which extends a curved 'beak-like' motif. In the top left corner of the panel are two chip-carved crescent lines, perhaps representing the eye of the bird. The 'beak' contains a recessed chip-carved panel that curves and terminates with a prong pointing towards the eye. The reverse is undecorated and there appears not to be any fittings or breaks. This suggests that it is a Pressblech die for making foil mounts. Suggested date c. 570-670. |
