Title |
Anglo-Saxon copper alloy small long brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper-alloy ansate brooch of Early Medieval date (c. AD 700-900).About half of the bow and the foot survive; the break is old. The bow is steeply curved and slightly faceted on the front, with a transverse rib at the centre of the bow and the break just beyond this. There is another transverse rib at the junction of bow and foot and a third at the end of the foot. In between are undecorated rectangular panels. On the reverse where the foot and bow meet back are the remains of an incomplete but integrally cast catchplate. The entire object measures 27mm in length, 9mm in width, 3mm in thickness, and 4g in weight.
This is an incomplete fragment from an ansate brooch of Weetch type X.A.ii, which in England are thought to date from the 8th or 9th centuries. |
