Title |
Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch, Rodmell, East Sussex |
||
Description |
English: Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch, cast copper alloy. Aberg Group II or III. The fragment consists of the foot and lower part of the brooch, including the catch plate. The start of the bow can be seen but is terminated by a worn break. There is a collar at the junction with the foot of the brooch. The animal head terminal has prominent, wedge shaped eyes, and is terminated by a worn break above the nostrils. The catch plate extends from the junction of the foot, approximately half the length of the object. It is worn and the return is broken. The object has a dark greyish green patina, and has had some kind of surface treatment applied post recovery. Brooches of this type date to the early 6th century AD.
A parallel for this brooch may be found in Macgregor and Bolick 1993, page 97, Ref 12.4. |
