Title
Anglo Saxon silver hooked tag
Description
English: Complete silver Anglo-Saxon hooked tag.

Description of find

The tag has a flat, circular plate from which extends the complete integral hook, which tapers and curves back to the rear of the object. The circular plate is decorated with a lightly-incised floral motif of irregularly sized, sub-oval segments radiating from a central circle and surrounded by a narrow border at the edge of the plate. This gives the pattern a flower-like appearance. The reverse of the circular plate is plain. The plate has two circular perforations for attachment, positioned on the opposite end to the hook. The plate has cracked below the centre.

Discussion

Similar hooked tags have recently been declared Treasure (see Youngs 2001 , p 40, No 56 and McDonald & Gannon in press ). The Bramptons Abbots example may be seen as differing from the parallels in having a comparatively lightly-incised motif as opposed to the motif surrounded by a recessed area holding niello. This object dates from c. AD 800-900.
