Description

Ball-and-stick model of the change in anion geometry and bonding upon the oxidation of potassium tetracyanoplatinate(II) trihydrate by bromine:

K2[Pt(CN)4].3H2O + Br2 → K2[Pt(CN)4]Br0.3·3H2O

Upon oxidation, the Pt···Pt separation decreases from 3.48 Å to 2.89 Å, and Pt-Pt bonds form from the overlap of 5dz2 orbitals, creating a delocalised conducting band along the chain axes.

X-ray crystallographic data from Inorg. Chem. (1976) 15, 74–78 and Mater. Res. Bull. (1975) 10, 411-415.

Model constructed in CrystalMaker 8.1.
