Description

Tufted grass 15-30 cm tall, with a sweet, spicy smell and occasionally short rhizomes. Leaves are flat, broad and bright green, sometimes with a notch near the leaf tip. A native of Europe and temperate Asia, it is mostly found in cool, moist, lower fertility areas. Tends to be more common in years with good winter rains. Shade and frost tolerant; not particularly drought tolerant. A weed of pastures (especially ungrazed), roadsides and remnant grassy native vegetation in farming areas. Highly invasive and can suppress native groundcover species. Low yielding and the very bitter leaves are not palatable to stock. An indicator of acid, low fertility soils. High populations may also indicate run down pastures.

Managed by: correcting soil deficiencies and using appropriate grazing for desirable species; hand removal of isolated plants; and spring burning and/or the use of high stocking rates at flowering to reduce vigour.
