A atual povoação de Idanha-a-Velha, pertencente ao concelho de Idanha-a-Nova, está edificada sobre as ruínas da importante cidade romana de Egitania. Posteriormente, sob o domínio dos Visigodos, esta antiga localidade converteu-se numa próspera sede de bispado.O templo episcopal de Idanha-a-Velha é um edifício religioso onde coexistem elementos da cultura romana, paleocristã, visigótica e da Baixa Idade Média, o que lhe confere singular e exótica volumetria arquitetónica e original coabitação de estilos artísticos.A antiga catedral egitanense era, na sua origem, uma igreja paleocristã de planta retangular, constituída por três naves, com a central mais elevada. Para além de manter esta estrutura arquitetónica - embora fossem introduzidas algumas alterações posteriores -, desta época subsistem diversos materiais, bem assim como o grande tanque do batistério cruciforme, localizado na parte exterior da frontaria do templo, obra do século V. A basílica visigótica está datada do século VI e implantou-se sobre a estrutura da anterior igreja paleocristã. No entanto, manteve a sua divisão estrutural de três naves distintas e ritmadas por sete arcos em ferradura, assentes em colunas com capitéis adaptados de antigas bases de colunas romanas. Da volumetria imposta pela reforma da Baixa Idade Média, realce para um janelão de arco de volta perfeita e para o arco do portal lateral da igreja, bela obra do depurado gótico ogival e datada dos finais do século XIV. A configuração atual da antiga catedral resultou de uma remodelação feita durante o século XVI, no reinado de D. Manuel I.No interior da basílica expõem-se várias inscrições epigráficas romanas, constituindo estas um dos mais importantes núcleos do Museu Egitanense, afirmando-se como testemunhos do seu glorioso passado. <a href="http://www.infopedia.pt/$antiga-catedral-de-idanha-a-velha" rel="nofollow">www.infopedia.pt/$antiga-catedral-de-idanha-a-velha</a> |
