Português: Antiga residência da Quinta Magnólia. Antigo Clube Inglês, British Country Club, meados de 60, inícios de 70. Residência no Funchal de John Howard March, inglês natural do New Hampshine (c. 1880-c. 1865), cônsul norte-americano desde 16 dez. 1816 (Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America, 3 vols.; Washington, 1828; 3:61) e sócio da firma John Hoyward 'March '& Co', que procedeu à sua construção por 1850 e que também possuía residência no Santo da Serra, a Quinta das Ameixieiras'. Em 1895 a quinta é adquirida por Herbert Watney (1843-1932), médico britânico, que amplia os seus limites até ao vale fronteiriço do Ribeiro Seco. Com a colaboração de um jardineiro paisagista inglês, o jardim foi alargado e enriquecido com uma extensa diversidade de árvores e plantas. Em 1930 a quinta é novamente vendida, nascendo em agosto de 1931 o British Country Club, com o advento de uma crescente “burguesia heterogénea” britânica na ilha da Madeira e as suas relações com a restante burguesia local, altura em que as quintas madeirenses se tornam espaços de estatutos sociais próprios, de negócio e de poder, de lazer e de ócio. Nesta fase foi preservada a diversidade botânica, mas foram introduzidas infraestruturas e equipamentos desportivos. Entre 1934 e 1974 são organizados vários campeonatos de ténis e, a partir de 1969, também de natação. A 1 de maio de 1981 a quinta, entretanto, adquirida pela Região Autónoma da Madeira, abre pela primeira vez ao público e, após novas obras de reabilitação, a 31 de julho de 2019, abre como Quinta Magnólia, Centro Cultural. |
