Nuer and Anuak have a thousand reasons to clash and as much opportunities to do it. The Nuer are pastoralists and nomad; the Anuak are cultivators and sedentaries. The sendentaries accuse the nomads of stealing their land; the nomads accuse the sedentaries of occupying too much land. The Anuak kingship system overlaps the federal decentralized system; the Nuer clanic system is a great way to take democratic power. etc. They might say they have nothing in common in terms of identity until their DNA. There is no confusion possible between an Anuak and a Nuer. The Nuer are proudly scarified... but not before 16 years old. One day, Omot, a proud drunk Anuak, was telling all these stories, until he asked to Odjay "Are you Anuak or Nuer? -a Nuer, answered Odjay hesitating -bah we are brothers, isn't it little brother? -yes of course... (big idiot, he added whispering) Is that the absurd relativity of identities? |
