Description |
English: A mature apple tree with a thick, leafy canopy stands in a field of tall vegetation. The Nelden-Hornbeck Farm (formerly the Roberts Farm) is locally significant within the context of Delaware Water Gap agriculture. It illustrates a continuum of agricultural practices typical to the region during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The property’s assemblage of landscape features reflects the traditions, landscape organization, and patterns of land use associated with local agriculture. The orchard, grassy pastures, and vegetated fencerows are typical of functional vegetation that has been observed throughout Delaware Water Gap. The orchard has only a few trees remaining. Some are quite large, but all are in decline. The remnants of the working orchard exist in the field north of the farm house, and new fruit trees have been planted. Owner census indicates an eight-acre orchard in 1880. This is the first time an orchard is mentioned, so the trees may date to this era, or they may have been a few fruit trees that a farmer had for personal use but were not classified as an orchard. According to Bill Coli, University of Massachusetts pomologist, this orchard contained one of the largest and possibly oldest apple trees in the NPS. His 1994 estimate was that this tree may have been 150 years old. *Subject: Cultural Landscapes
