Summary[edit]
DescriptionArachnocampa richardsae.jpg |
English: Bioluminescence in a limestone karst cavity in Dorrigo National Park, New South Wales, Australia. Larvae of the fungus gnat Arachnocampa richardsae, unique to eastern Australia, produce adhesive liquid droplets forming "necklaces" hanging down from the rock. The luminosity results from a chemical reaction involving the heterocyclic substance luciferin, taking place in altered secretion organs known as Malpighian tubules. The emitted light serves to attract insects, which become ensnared by the sticky droplets, providing a food source for gnats.
The pink glow in the photo is caused by lichens, illuminated by an ultraviolet flashlight.
