English: The Ark of the Ivories (also named Chest of San Isidro de León), is the oldest artefact remaining from the workshop of ivory in León, Spain. Its construction was ordered by the leonese king Fernando I and queen Sancha, to be given as a gift to the Collegium of San Isidoro of León to preserve John the Baptist's jaw (one of the many in the christian world) and the body of the martyr child Pelayo. Currently the ark is kept in the museum of this collegium. |
