Deutsch: Diese künstlerische Darstellung zeigt einen virtuellen Blick von der Oberfläche eines der drei Planeten, die einen sehr kühlen Zwergstern nur 40 Lichtjahre von der Erde entfernt umkreisen und die mit dem TRAPPIST-Teleskop am La Silla-Observatorium der ESO entdeckt wurden. Diese fremden Welten haben Größen und Temperaturen, die denen der Venus und Erde gleichen und stellen die besten Ziele für die Suche nach Leben jenseits des Sonnensystems dar, die bisher gefunden wurden. Es handelt sich um die ersten Planeten, die je um einen solch winzigen und dunklen Stern entdeckt wurden. English: This artist’s impression shows an imagined view from the surface one of the three planets orbiting an ultracool dwarf star just 40 light-years from Earth that were discovered using the TRAPPIST telescope at ESO’s La Silla Observatory. These worlds have sizes and temperatures similar to those of Venus and Earth and are the best targets found so far for the search for life outside the Solar System. They are the first planets ever discovered around such a tiny and dim star. In this view one of the inner planets is seen in transit across the disc of its tiny and dim parent star.
Français : Cette vue d’artiste montre une vue imaginaire depuis la surface d’une des trois planètes en orbite autour d’une étoile naine extrêmement froide située à seulement 40 années-lumière de la Terre. Ces trois planètes ont été découvertes avec le télescope TRAPPIST à l’Observatoire de La Silla de l’ESO. Ces mondes ont des tailles et des températures similaires à ceux de Vénus et de la Terre et constituent les meilleures cibles découvertes à ce jour pour chercher la vie en dehors du Système Solaire. Den befinner sig bara 40 ljusår bort från jorden och upptäcktes av teleskopet TRAPPIST vid ESO:s La Sillaobservatorium.
