Summary[edit]

Description

Europe District celebrated its diversity May 30 with the Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month observance.

The theme was Unite our Voices by Working Together. Candace Lotomau who volunteers on the district’s Special Emphasis committee was the program manager.

Lotomau, from Hawaii, said she loves to share her culture with everyone. The month of May was chosen because it commemorates the immigration of the first Japanese in May 1843 and the completion of the transcontinental railroad in May 1869.

“Nationally, we’re recognized for helping shape the United States into the great country that it is,” Lotomau said.

Col. John Baker, district commander, spoke of the dichotomy of World War II where Japanese-Americans were placed in internment camps and the bravery of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, made up of Americans of Japanese descent. It is one of the most decorated units in military history.

The observance included a martial arts demonstration, Hawaiian and Samoan dances and concluded with a variety of Asian-America and Pacific Islander food for lunch.
