Summary

[edit]
Description

Just northwest of downtown Gyeongju, I came across the remnants of an old tombstone, erected for a king whose rule ran between 654 and 661.

The tombstone itself is gone. However, the turtle pedestal remains, as does the top decorative stone that would have been above the tombstone. And many visitors have tossed in some low-value coins for good luck.

King Muyeol was succeeded by his son, Munmu, who defeated Korea's two other kingdoms, Goguryeo (高句麗) and Baekje (百濟#, and for the first time, put Korea under unified rule by Silla #新羅), in 668.
