Closing in on the main hall. Now I see 815 flagpoles of varying heights, displaying the national flag. Quite a sight. Of course, 815 is a significant number because it marks August 15th; on that date in 1945, Japan surrendered to the Allies to end World War II, and per the provisions of Potsdam Declaration, Japan's rule over Korea ended. However, the euphoria was short lived, as the Soviets, who had entered the war against Japan only six days before, were busy marching into northern Korea already, and the US hastily proposed dividing Korea at the 38th Parallel for a split Soviet-American trusteeship rule until the mess could be sorted out. Three years later, on August 15th, 1948, the Republic of Korea was proclaimed. However, due to continuing Soviet-American disagreements, the UN-monitored elections for the first Republic of Korea government were limited to the American sector, and the Republic of Korea ended up only being the southern government. By September 9th of the same year, Democratic People's Republic of Korea was set up in the Soviet sector, and Korea was permanently divided. |
