Неизвестный художник XIX века. Портрет войскового атамана С.Д. Ефремова (с оригинала А.П. Антропова)

Старочеркасский историко-архитектурный музей-заповедник.

Подлинник находился в галерее войсковых атаманов Ефремовского дворца, собрании потомков Ефремовых Подуровских; копия — в Донском музее, Новочеркасском музее истории донского казачества.

Степан Данилович Ефремов (1715-1781 года) — войсковой атаман Войска Донского (1753-1772 года). Участвовал во главе донских казаков в походе на Петергоф (1762 год) во время переворота Екатерины II, за что получил шашку.

С.Д. Ефремов вел переговоры с крымскими татарами, кабардинцами, черкесами, калмыками, находя поддержку у воевавших с Россией соседей. Упрочение безраздельной власти атамана, его стремление к обособлению Войска от контроля государства стало угрозой самодержавию. Политические проступки и расхищение им войсковой казны были доказаны на следствии Военной коллегии, военный суд приговорил его к смертной казни. Однако Екатерина II, помня верность атамана в Петергофском походе, смилостивилась и заменила казнь ссылкой в Пернов (ныне город Пярну). Через два года Ефремов вернулся в Петербург, где жил до кончины.
