Description

"Coco water" is a refreshing beverage made of licorice sticks macerated in lemon water.[1]

This drink began to be sold on the streets of Paris at the end of the 18th century. The coco water merchant, wearing a white apron, carried a painted sheet metal fountain[2] on his back and a few cups on his belt. It was a small profession in France and Belgium, particularly in Paris and Brussels. It disappeared near the beginning of the 20th century. One such fountain is on display on the ground floor of the painting's current location.[3]
