Summary[edit]

Description An army Austin Champ 5cwt light utility vehicle (Model FV1801A), the British equivelent of the Willys Jeep (itself developed from an American Austin design!) at the Chatham Historic Dockyard, 17 February 2020. The Champ had outstanding cross country ability but was complex and very expensive so only 11,000 of the planned 15,000 were built (in 1951-56) and the Army procured the equally outstanding but much cheaper and simpler Land Rover instead. In addition, the Royal Marines bought 30 and the Australian Army 400 (plus 400 ex-British Army ones). It was a specialised military vehicle that, in contrast to the Land Rover, was not easily adaptable to the civilian role and only about 500 civilian versions were built.
