DescriptionAvalokitesvara at New Orleans Museum of Art.jpg |
City Park, in the north of the city and reached by the Canal Street Streetcar, has a very nice art museum. This Avalokitesvara, the Buddhist Bodhisattva of Mercy and Compassion, is from the 7th Century Pakistan, and is in bronze. Avalokitesvara is the most beloved of all the Bodhisattvas ("Junior Buddhas" who have not completely reached enlightenment, in order to allow all other faithful to reach enlightenment as well), and as Buddhism later reached China, the Chinese morphed him into a female and translated his name to Guanyin, to combine Chinese native fertility goddess imageries with the blessing of Avalokitesvara. |
