Summary[edit]

Description

This was the last of the 21 Carvairs produced, and is one of only two surviving as complete airframes. Originally built in April 1945 as a DC-4 with the c/n 27314, she entered USAAF service as a C-54E serial '44-9088'. Later sold for civilian use, she flew as 'N88881' with Pan American and 'JA6015' with Japan Airlines before passing to Ansett Australian as 'VH-INM'. In 1968, Ansett had her converted into a Carvair by Aviation Traders, after which she continued in service still as VH-INM. After ten years she became 'ZK-NWB' with Nationwide air, and then 'N5459M' with Hawaii Pacific Air in 1990. In 2002 she made her final move to Phoebus Apollo in South Africa as '9J-PAA', whose colours she still wears. Now stored alongside the company's DC-3 and DC-4, it seems sadly unlikely that she'll ever fly again, although she appears to be complete so anything is possible! Rand Airport, Germiston. South Africa.
